Dealing with SLEEP APNEA SNORING

Sleep Apnea >> Symptoms of Sleep Apnea >> Sleep Apnea Snoring

I didn't knew about my sleep apnea snoring, until my fiancee told me that I roar like a lion in sleep.

She said to me that I don't snore like a normal person, because I have a very loud and frequent snoring.

Well, heavy snoring is often a sign of sleep apnea. The snoring stops when a person with sleep apnea stops breathing. It begins again, sometimes with a snort or a gasp, when the person takes the next breath.

What should you do, if you have Sleep Apnea Snoring ?

Many people with heavy snoring don't think that they may have sleep apnea disorder. Some of them have not even heard of such a disease. They apply other methods to heal only a symptom, not the real cause, like I did the first time:

  • for his heavy snoring, a patient might be advised by a friend to try a decongestant or to sleep in another room and let his wife to sleep alone.

  • If he has weight problems, he will just try and try again to lose weight.

  • For his sleep complaints, a sleeping pill.

  • And this is the way that an untreated sleep apnea progressed.

My doctor said to me that my snoring is caused by an airway narrowing at the back of the mouth. This obstacle creates an air turbulence when breathing in, causing the soft tissues from my throat to vibrate. This vibration makes the noise that can disrupt the sleep of my fiancee.

Since I have a mild sleep apnea, I didn't choose surgery to treat snoring. There are other ways to stop snoring, less painful.

  • A change in sleep position may eliminate snoring, sleeping on the side of your body.
  • It was hard for me to learn how to sleep on the side rather than on the back. I started with a small rucksack containing a pillow to make me lie on the side.

I couldn't sleep too much with this rucksack, because I had pain in my back. But the good news was that snoring stopped. At least my fiancee slept well without hearing any noise.

Then I started to search something smaller and comfortable to sleep on the side. In the end, I bought a sleep apnea pillow which was much more comfortable.

  • There are many sleep apnea patients out there that use special dental devices to treat snoring and obstructive apnea. Although they have a great success, not all dental devices are comfortable enough to wear them.

  • Another sleep apnea snoring prevention is:
    • losing weight
    • stop smoking
    • avoid alcohol and sedatives before sleeping.

  • If you have a problem with nasal congestion, ask your doctor about antihistamine to reduce swelling.

  • CPAP is the most common treatment for sleep apnea, because is the most effective. However, not all the patients tolerate a mask on his face. Click here to learn more about CPAP.

  • Another option that I didn't tried it personally is surgery. By removing the adenoids and tonsils, surgery is an effective snoring cure and also it can improve sleep apnea disorder.

I feel lucky that I don't need to choose snoring surgery to be my only snoring remedy. But most of the people with sleep apnea are not so lucky. Surgery may be the only option for them.
