Dizzy, headache with sleep apnea?

by T Belmont
(scottsville, KY)

My husband wakes up with a bad headache. He feels like he is in a cloud, foggy and dizzy. This last all day. Does this sound like Sleep Apnea?

Answer

Dizziness can be a result of sleep apnea, and many people with untreated sleep disorders complain about symptoms related to dizziness, such as:
  • feelings as the ground drops away from you when you're walking,

  • losing your balance when you close your eyes and move your head (especially in the shower),

  • rocking sensation, like after spending a long period of time on a boat,

  • and many other examples related to losing balance.

Morning headache is another side effect from untreated sleep apnea.

So, a bunch of weird stuff is going to happen to your brain if have sleep deprivation. However, you cannot diagnose a sleep disorder only from these symptoms. The migraine and dizziness can be caused by other health problems, including tumors.

You can find more about headaches and sleep apnea here.

So is important for your husband to get a good work-up from a neurologist. He should also be checked by an ENT, chiropractic, brain MRI. And, if nothing is wrong, the next step will be a sleep study.

If the final diagnosis is sleep apnea, the CPAP will definitely improve the dizziness, headaches, memory problems, and quality of sleep, as long as your husband can tolerate it.
